ok I have to build gigdirectory.net from scratch and I may have an invite to join with a 30 000 user data base of like minds.

I have been researching the latest post nuke modules and love it, but this other data base's site content system is asp.

asp or php
which is more versatile and stable and has a great range of modules to suit an interactive community of arts and media folk?

there are a lot of great articles written on this..and they all seem to differ really. the real key here is what particular architecture and/or software are you going to use to develop this think i have used both php and asp, and i like both of them. i use php when connecting to mysql databases and asp when connecting to ms sql server databases. most of the time, i use asp because 90% of my work is with ms sql server databases. but when i have had he occasion to use php and mysql, i really didn't find that much differnce between them.

you also have to ask yourself what kind of server components will you most likely be using. this has a lot to do with it as well. obviously activex and the like are easier to implement with asp. but if i were going more for things in cgi, or perl or whatever the case, i would certainly think php would be just fine.

now some people like to choose between these either because they hate or love microsoft technologies. i neither hate nor love ms technologies, i use whatever is available for the particular job.

hope that was some kind of help.

    have a good one.

Are you talking old school ASP, or ASP .NET? I will assume ASP .NET, since you posted this to .NET groupies.

In my humble opinion, I would choose ASP .NET over PHP. Keep in mind I do all of my development with .NET, and I have only looked into PHP, so my views ARE biased.

When I looked at PHP, it seemed to me to be too much like ASP (old school). I had a lot of issues with that. I like the complied code that ASP .NET creates, and it is much better than old school ASP spaghetti code. You may even want to work on your design, and tweak it big time, and start developing the app in ASP .NET 2005, it will be far better than the current version. 50% less code needed, since they have automated many standard tasks. If you want, you can even go to the core and re-write how it talks to databases.

I admit that I am not very knowledgeable on PHP, so if I am wrong about them not having compiled code like ASP .NET, then I apologize :)

    Those are my 2 cents.
